Australia Rejects Sharia Law

AUSTRALIA does not welcome sharia law. It violates the Australian Constitution. It would send Western civilisation back to the Dark Ages. It chains freethinking women to a set of absurd laws derived from the misogynistic prophet, Mohammed.

My column in The Australian today “Sharia: dark ages death sentence” critiques the claim made by Muslim activists that sharia is a benevolent concept. I consider the increasingly common retort used by Islamists in the West that the reason we object to sharia law is because we don’t understand sharia. That enables Muslim activists to reframe the discussion about Islam and control the narrative from their perspective. Here’s how to respond:

Australians do not need to understand sharia. We are a secular liberal democracy with a 61 per cent Christian population. In the 2011 census, 22 per cent of Australians selected “no religion”. Muslims constitute 2 per cent of the population. If you want to understand Australian law, read the Constitution. If you want to understand Australian values, read the founding fathers. If you want to understand Australian faith, read the Christian Bible, Enlightenment thought, or both.

I have read the Koran and contrast Mohammed’s misogyny to Muslim activist Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s claim that Islam is the world’s “most feminist religion”.

Abdel-Magied claimed that Islam is the world’s “most feminist religion”. Feminists need Islam like the Enlightenment needs the Dark Ages. Witness Mohammed on women: “I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you.” What evidence did Mohammed provide to support his belief that women are stupid? They might be ungrateful to their husbands or curse at them. Many Koranic verses celebrate hatred of women: “Men have authority over women because God has made one superior to the other … Good women are obedient … as for those from whom you fear disobedience … beat them.” Islamic State celebrates its preferred Koranic verses, including that wellspring of feminism: “Marry … any slave girls you may own.” Ah, yes, female sexual slavery — just smell the freedom, women.

Abdel-Magied came to prominence after defending sharia on Australia’s publicly funded broadcaster the ABC. Senator Jacqui Lambie stated: “We have one law in this country and it is the Australian law. It is not sharia law.” Abdel-Magied shouted over Lambie several times and complained about critics of Islam not understanding sharia. Try telling that to the superb enlightenment author and survivor of FGM, Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

As Ayaan Hirsi Ali pointed out in The Weekend Australian, when faced with the abuses of women living under sharia law in Islamic states, Abdel-Magied erects a distinction between sharia and politics.

In Islamist states, it is a false distinction.

The cultural values promoted under sharia are deeply problematic for the West. Just ask Charlie Hebdo staff. I write:

Adopting sharia-derived values would affect Western civilisation in profoundly negative ways. Consider the fundamental value of freedom. The Organisation of Islamic Co-operation defines human rights according to the Cairo Declaration, which permits our freedoms as long as they are not “contrary to the principles of the sharia”.

Next week, Abdel-Magied is due to appear on SBS (a publicly funded network dedicated to multiculturalism) to host a program titled “The Truth About Racism”.

As I write:

Australians are tired of being called racist for defending our most essential values while the government throws public money at an activist media that undermines them. We are forced to pay for the ABC to ridicule patriots, smear conservatives and spin secure border policy as xenophobic.

One by one, Australians will take the cue and cast their votes elsewhere because the enlightened West made its choice centuries ago. Like our forebears, we choose the light.

It appears many Australians share my concern about sharia law. A petition online calling  for the cessation of public funding for Abdel-Magied has reached over 15,000 signatures, with numbers climbing rapidly.

Should Australians be forced to fund a person who sought advice from Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir spokesman Wassim Doureihi on how to argue her case? Why is a woman who claims Islam is the world’ s most feminist religion asking advice from an organisation that responded to the forced marriage of a 12 year old girl to a Muslim man thus: “Something being illegal according to Western law does not make it immoral.”

Fortunately, the gross immorality of child marriage and other barbaric practices endorsed by Islamic states is illegal in Australia because we don’t – and will never – accept sharia law.

  1. Great work Jennifer, really appreciate your analytical writing and the courage you show in your work.

    Best Regards,
    Petr

  2. Thank you Jennifer. Excellent expose of the attack on our freedoms in the West.

Where are all the men folk of these Islamic women Sharia law advocates so popular with the feminist Left? Could it be that they use women to front for them and be the acceptable female public face so beloved by feminists in the West? The irony is the feminist leftists are so easily fooled by such misogynist men that they fight to defend the ideology which seeks their oppression.

    Sign the petition.

  3. I wonder if Australians appreciate the value of The Australian newspaper and its willingness to challenge the zeitgist within the majority of our media. My thanks to Jennifer and The Australian.

  4. Thank you. The government is so weak. There should be NO sharia law in this country. I’m totally fed up with all the crap concerning Muslims who want us to change for them.

  5. Thank you Jennifer for enlightening Australians about the real purpose of Sharia law.
Petition signed. None of the other migrants have endeavoured to change Australian law and customs to those in the countries they left behind.
We need to spread this message until all Australians and our politicians realise what they have invited into this country.

  6. Thank you for your efforts. I, like most thinking Australians, I have long felt that the ABC is a slave to an ill-educated somewhat childlike, nihilist-liberal zeitgeist. It is inflamed by the 21st century social media meme culture. The ABC is deeply intolerant, especially toward those advocating for the values of freedom, true toleration, open informed debate and the inherent equality and sanctity of all human life. My family has lived for and died defending such values in multiple wars ever since migrating to South Australia in 1841.

  7. Congratulations Jennifer ORIEL for your great article in today’s Australian – 20/2/2017 – exposing the evil that is sharia law and how it has no place in Australia. You are correct about the Bible and Enlightenment setting the scene for the freedom we enjoy in Western society. Our Lord Jesus Christ was often criticised for allowing women into his inner circle. In His statement “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God”, He enshrined the separation of secular society and religion.

Keep up the good work Jennifer, you have many supporters out here in Reader Land. God Bless.

  8. Thank you Jennifer. Journos like you and Rita Panahi giving us hope. Why aren’t you on any social network?
